a simple rotation counter would consist of a tab sticking off the rotating object that activates a button or lever on a counter like on a hay baler or one od those hand held clicker counters the guys at the state fair use to count the number of people going through the gate

I was thinking along that line as well. A mechanical bicycle odometer, perhaps?

Or, can the original poster be a little more specific?

Will you be designing a rotation counting machine? A machine that " counts it's own rotations"?

Or, a rotation counting machine? Or a machine that counts the rotations of, "some object"?
