Euro to 3pin Mains Plug Adaptor and BS1363

06/11/2010 7:13 AM

I have a device which is terminated in a 2 pin Euro style plug. To plug it into the UK mains socket it is supplied with a 2 pin to UK 3 pin adaptor, but the adaptor is not fused. Would this not make it illegal to use re BS1363, or is it covered by another standard?

I believe that would be illegal. Unfortunately a wide range of UK style plugs and sockets are made and used in the far east which are non-compliant and potentially dangerous. Faults include un-fused plugs and un-shuttered sockets with weakly spring contacts.

For legal advice I would visit.

http://www.bsigroup.com/

If the supply is to any British Standard it would be safe to use as it is generally fail safe.

I have purchased many products and it arrives with a euro 2 pin socket bodged into a cheap plastic socket to fit UK mains outlets.

For me this is okay as I know my supply is protected and fused to the correct current draw so whatever happens it is safe as can be.

If you are worried about the fuse just cut the 2 pin off and fit a BS1363 plug and problem solved for only a few pence.

If you are still worried you need the wiring regulations from the Institute of electrical engineers.

Its certainly illegal and could be dangerous.

The adapters of this type I have seen also had a fuse for compliance and safety.

Just cut the plug off and buy a new UK 13 amp plug. Do put the correct sized fuse in it as well, do not leave the 13 amp fuse in there unless it is REALLY the right fuse.....

I am not even sure that adding a proper mains cable inline fuse would be acceptable, it does not appear to be when reading the British Standards for 13 amp ring mains systems....but I could be wrong on that point.....
