DG Sizing

Should we check the characteristics of engine,alternator and the AVR or the curve showing drop in terminal voltage when applying a load ?

No. While putting the alternator for Parallel Operation only to be seen/compared with the other DG set.

Normally you check all the information available:

When applying a load, you check the voltage and frequency drop from no load to the specified (required) maximum load you want to apply.

The makers will give you the % regulation for the governor used on their engine (+/- % accuracy in maintaining the frequency fromno-load to full-load)... And the accuracy of the AVR used in maintaining the voltage selected fron No-load to Full-load.

The precision class of the Governor and the AVR come with a cost (more accurate, more costly) but there are standards.

For parallelling 2 units, you need to know that you can modify the drop curve of either values... this is called droop setting on both the governor and AVR { now a days, this is done with electronic governors and digital AVR to maximum accuracy and automatic control... in case someone will say that I was old fascioned..!}. But I have explained the simple basics from where every good electrical engineer will start on this topic.
