Diesel Level Measurement

06/16/2010 9:11 AM

Hello everyone!!

I want to measure diesel level in a tank of dimensions 1m x 0.5m x 1m (l x b x h). Can anyone suggest economical method of doing so?

Thanks in advance.

Use a dip stick.

A graduated stick would do it.

I like dipstick. Or, unscrew filler cap, look in tank.

Or:

Heavy duty glass sight gauge shows liquid level at a glance. Fits 3/4" NPS bung. Plated steel housing is 22" high. Has female outlet for 3/4" NPT faucet (not included). Standard Gauge has Buna-N seal. Ideal for petroleum products. Chemical Gauge has Viton® seal. Use with a wide range of chemicals.

I did, figuratively, as I finished my reply.

OK. Which technique is being used to perform the measurement:

  • Magnetic Follower?
  • Ultrasonic reflection?
  • Differential Pressure?
  • Radar?

What facilities are there on the tank for attaching the sensor?

What output signal is required?

If the tank were made of PYREX®, you could use a camera. Output signal would then be visual. Of course, you could capture and transmit the image of sight glass offered by lynlynch in #3.

the most economical technique is to be used which rules out ultrasonic and radar.

the tank is a closed one with no inherent facility for attachment. attachment of sensor will depend on its working.

output signal can be voltage or current(ultimately i am planning to use a NI datalogger)

In that case, a submersible cable-mounted pressure sensor, as used in water boreholes for example, might be the solution. The wetted materials ned to be suitable for immersion in diesel. A hole is needed in the top of the tank of sufficient size to pass the sensor through.

Yep - a dipstick is the most economical. Bamboo garden canes can often be pressed into immediate service in the vicinity of a kerosene storage tank, for example, being easily found nearby.

Try rigging up a fuel guage and sender from a wrecked car or tractor.

Maybe even an electronic scale under the tank could answer your problem

For a few £k I'll design you a resonant acoustic level gauge (electromechanical/electronic version of tapping it with a knuckle and listening to the tone). £100 extra for 4-20mA output. Cash with order, please.

yeah, but for £220 I'll make you a Longbow from well seasoned Yew which will punch a hole in the drum and youll be able to see if there's deisel in there.

Lots of posts telling you what the "least expensive" method is, but none are accurate.

The least expensive method is a pressure transmitter installed in a tee just below the tank (likely in the drain valve connection) that reads in Inches, Water Gage. You just have to post a conversion chart telling volume in gallons/liters whatever relative to the gage output. OR- if you have a functional code writer, you can convert the Inches, WC to Inches of Oil, if all you want is to know how full the tank is.

To make the installation TOTALLY "safe"- install the transmitter on top of a siphon loop like is used for steam gages with a riser that puts the transmitter above the tank. That way, the oil will only pressurize the air in the loop and riser and never reach the transmitter or its electronics and the transmitter will still generate a valid signal.

We made our own using a ten turn potentiometer and a wheel of 10 cm circumference driven by a chain and a polyethylene float for a 100 cm depth. For underground storage tank we designed a dip stick with a float that locks the highest level reached. One has to remember to bring down the float to the bottom position each time.

If the tank is mounted at discrete points, perhaps you might consider load cells. Tare out the weight of the empty tank and the weight of the diesel is pretty well known. This would give you a true reading of the energy level since temperature varies the volume of the fuel.
