Area of an Angle Cut

06/17/2010 11:15 AM

Am having trouble remembering my college classes. Has been too long.

Need to find the area in square inches of the face left from cutting a solid (round) shaft at a 45 degree angle. For some reason, I am coming up with a different dimension each time.

Just the formula would be fine.

Thanks to all who can help

Transverse area/cos(angle)

In your case pi*d^2/4/cos45°. When the angle =0 then cos(angle)=1.

1/cos45]=1.4142 (= sqrt(2))

Should just be the area of an ellipse, shouldn't it?

Pi x R1 X R2

R2 would be the radius of your shaft, R1 would be 1/2 the distance of the hypotenuse of a right triangle with sides of the diameter of the shaft. Sorry, my math skills are so rusty, I don't know how to express that a formula :(

Both answers so far are correct:-

Πr2√2

But what if the angle wasn't 45°?

Then the Area is ΠRRcut

Where Rcut = R/Cos(ß)

But, he said the angle was 45°

Hello Randall.

Should not angle β be the included angle?

Or am I looking at your drawing upside down / inside out / crosseyed?

.

ß=ß (I know this sounds stupid but you know what I mean)

Cos(ß) = R/Rcut

So Rcut = R/Cos(ß)

Or am I looking at your drawing upside down / inside out / crosseyed?

Perhaps just a "Floydian slip".

ALL of you that replied to this post were a big help.

Was attempting to figure the amount of pressure that was applied to the floor by a machine that was held up by legs made of shaft cut at a 45 degree angle where the legs met the floor.
