Immersible Low Temp Heater

06/28/2010 2:47 PM

I am looking for an immersible 110V heating element to keep a low% alcohol solution at 40C. It has to be able to run dry as solution will evaporate (glass won't do). I have tried hot water tank heating elements but the ones I have been able to obtain do not have enough temp control i.e. too hot. Any suggestions.

Thanks

If you use a 480 volt element at 120 volts, it will draw 1/4 of its rated current and produce 1/16 of its rated wattage. Then, if the fluid evaporates, the watt density of the element may be low enough to keep it from overheating. Further, it could be controlled by a solid-state heater control, which in effect modulates the voltage to maintain a nearly constant temperature.

Metal immersion cup heater, with a timer or power limiter? Who knows? You don't even give any idea of scale.

Aquarium heater in water. The heater heats a glass container full of water that is placed in the larger container of your alcohol solution. Keep the water topped up. Let the alcohol evaporate.

Ignore my previous reply. Most aquarium heaters top out at 35 degree C.

As already mentioned by someone else- you have not mentioned the volume, kind of container etc etc. Are you looking for controlling temperature in a small cup or is it a huge tank of hundreds or thousands of liters ? Temperature controllers are available to maintain 1000Deg C+/- 0.5 Deg C. So what is your specification / requirement?

To accurately control the heat you would need to the submersible heater, temperature feedback, and a controller with the high-limit cut off to keep from burning up the heater when the solution evaporates. This is a very common industrial application. With accuracy and control comes cost, so if you are looking for a quick, low cost solution, you will sacrifice the accuracy and control. We specialize in heat and can you. If you like, call Andy at E&M Sales at 303-979-5000.

Why submersible? Why not an element under the container?

Then light bulbs could be used, varying the wattage to suit needs, possibly with a high-temperature cut off in ,or on the tank for when it runs dry.

Sounds kinda like a covert distiller to me.

Good luck.
