Emergency Lowering Load For Offshore Crane

06/29/2010 11:51 PM

Hi All,

I have just received a request from offshore well head platform asking for engineering a solution to lower load in case lost of power supply. This is a high level safety issue as crane also use to carry people. Is there anyone experience in this, please help.

Thanks,

Thieu

Please give more specifics.

If this is a hydraulic crane or platform, a bleed-off needle valve will do the job.

If it is a cable drum, some sort of release combined with a brake could also do this, but the details would be more tricky.

Mountain climbers would just rappel.

First step is to provide specific crane details. 1

If this crane is currently in service on a rig or platform I am surprised to think it doesn't already have an emergency lowering scheme on it as most do.

Do your homework and I do mean all of it... Check all regulatory societies associated with your location and specific application.

Check API standards, BV, Lloyds, ABS, the specific drilling companies QSMS/ISM, etc....

What ever you do must be built around there standards and limitations, not ours. Once you know what you can and can-not do, offer this information along with more specifics on the crane in question and it will be time for a solution to your problem

In the UK it is not lawful to lower people on a crane or in a lift without using power to do it, and were it to be otherwise the Engineer/Surveyor for the company providing indemnity insurance would not cover any liability for using the equipment.

Consider hooking the crane into the standby generator system.
