07/03/2010 8:00 AM

Hi,

For Air Operated actuator (AOV) , How can we differentiate between Rack/Pinion & Scotch Yoke Design By looking at P&ID

I'm not sure, but I doubt that P&ID symbols would distinguish between the two, unless there some additional notes about the actuator, or a legend listing the component data.

Strictly speaking, you can't.

The ISA's P&ID standards differentiate certains classes of instruments (different types of flow elements and flowmeters, for example) and final control elements (different types of valves, for example).

However, when it comes to most actuators, not all types are covered by the standards. Solenoids, pistons, cylinders, etc., have their own symbols, but some actuators and some specific attributes aren't covered. Like for instruments, their functions (e.g., rate-limited, integrating, etc.) are given in small boxes beside their symbols, but specific mechanical details are given elsewhere, typically instrument specification sheets and on supplier datasheets.

Cheers!

It isn't usually done, however, were it to be done, then a standard symbol cover sheet or other internal P&ID Symbology Standard would be present to accompany the project- or plant-specific P&ID drawing.
