What Lab Apparatus is Used to Make Water from H and O?

07/11/2010 7:15 PM

I've seen electrolysis many times, but I've never seen the set up or apparatus which could be used to synthesize water. What would it be ? Is electricity or heat used, or high pressure ? There's likely more than one method, I would guess. Would someone explain them or show me ? What was going on when the vast quantities of earth's water was being compounded ? Thanks.

I think all you have to do is burn hydrogen which ignites quite readily. The reaction gives off heat (exothermic) and yields Water (H2O) by combining molecular hydrogen (two atoms) with one oxygen atom.

I'll have to think about the lab apparatus

A mixing nozzle, a match, and a condenser for the resultant steam? 2H2+O2→2H2O.

Definitely not lab scale, the Hindenburg approach is an large scale H2 + O2 conversion technique:

See...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxyhydrogen

Chemistry lecture hall, first day 1980: Chem professor takes an empty 5 lb coffee can with plastic lid on top and 1 small hole in the metal bottom. He fills it with hydrogen gas from a small tank. He positions the can on a table with metal (with small hole) side up and places an ignitor near the hole. A nearly invisible small flame starts as the lighter hydrogen gas escapes from the hole, mixes with air, and burns. At the same time, air (and oxygen) is entering the can to replace the escaped hydrogen. As the professor lectures on about stoichiometric ratios of fuel and air, the mixture inside the can reaches the correct ratio of hydrogen to oxygen and

BOOM!

The internal mixture of 2H2+O2 is quickly converted to steam and the can rockets almost to the 40 ft. ceiling of the lecture hall. Some student were frightened, but most applauded a very effective demonstration. This chemistry professor knew how to captivate and engage his students for the rest of the semester. Good luck trying that in our current vacuous and litigious environment

You'll be pleased to know my lecturer did this a couple of years ago - but he left the lights off and just had us sitting in the dark watching the pretty flame until..... BOOOOM!!! Great start to the lecture. Maybe we're less litigious down this end of the world??

Almost any source of ignition will do it, from an electric spark to a lighted match.

Apparatus Used to Make Water from H2 and O2

07/12/2010 10:16 AM

There is a piece of equipment designed to do this; Hydrogen Fuel Cell.

Here is a factsheet regarding the general operation of them. Google will reveal many, many hits on the subject.

Very good. Instead of an explosion, resulting a lot of wasted energy (unless used in an ICE), the fuel cell effects a controlled reaction with output in the form of electrical energy.

And here's a biotech version of a hydrogen fuel cell...

Overall maintenance costs?

maintenance... the article said they could only keep it working temporarily - don't know if they've found a solution for that yet.
