Keyboard Problems

07/13/2010 12:35 PM

Knowing there are some very knowledgeable people out there, I hope someone can point me in the right direction to solve a keyboard problem.

Operating system Windows XP.

I have just had to replace a motherboard and because of the differences between the new and the old boards had to reload Windows from scratch. Despite setting language to English (United Kingdom) and location to United Kingdom, not all the symbols which appear on screen agree with the symbols on the keyboard! In particular the English pound currency symbol has disappeared completely, although the alpha-numric and punctuation symbols are correct.

Any pointers?

Regards,

Tony Lee.

Tony,

Give this a try: go into Control Panel, then select "Regional and Language Options". This opens up a whole range of options that lets you customize your keyboard to something more suitable.

1) Yes Mizuti,I do have the latest service packs. My version of Windows came with service pack 2 and service pack 3 was recently downloaded and installed. To be honest I think this is an irrelevance.

2) Logan, Thanks for your reply, but I have already been there and done that.

3) Mikerho, if you had used your noddle you would have realised that the quetion had come from someone in Grear Britain and by the time the replies had been posted I was sleeping the sleep of the righteous. This makes your irrelevant comment even more rude than a lack of response by me!

The missing pond sign isn't th only problem - I could get this using the character map - but other symbols, although present don't correspond to to the key symbols.

There are presumably keyboard code to character lookup tables which are loaded for different regions. I was hoping someone would know where these are located and guide me ensure the correct table was loaded.

Regards,

Tony Lee.

Yo, Tony! You readin' any 'o these replies?

It would be nice to get some feedback!

In fact, it is rude for you not to give some reply to the efforts of people trying to help you.

Windows can't "read" what letter is on the key, it can only see the position of that key. So, if it's true your windows is set to English (UK), it might be the fault of the keyboard, not the computer.

Maybe test with a different keyboard and check?

Just a suggestion!

There are actually two keyboard settings in Windows XP. One is where you would expect it, in "Settings/Control Panel/Keyboard/Hardware". The other is wierd- it is under "Settings/Control Panel/Regional and Language/Languages/Details". I have had to mess around with these two settings to convince my XP machine that I am using a Spanish keyboard while I am working in English. And, of course, there are infinite variations on the "standard" Spanish keyboard, and I had to try several different ones to find the one that really corresponded to the actual key layout I am using. Linux is a whole lot smarter about this...

You'll find many variations...

http://softboy.net/keystroke-converter/

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/97738

assign keyboard layout switch hotkey not listed in the keyboard applet

To assign left alt+shift to 1st layout and right alt+shift to 2nd layout. How to adapt it to the modern hal way?
Here it is:

create $XKBROOT/mysym :

Code: partial modifier_keys xkb_symbols "shift_ctrl_1" { key <LFSH> { type="PC_BREAK", symbols[Group1]= [ Shift_L, ISO_First_Group ] }; key <RTSH> { type ="PC_BREAK", symbols[Group1]= [ Shift_R, ISO_Last_Group ] }; key <LCTL> { [ Control_L, ISO_First_Group ] }; key <RCTL> { [ Control_R, ISO_Last_Group ] }; };

add 1 line to $XKBROOT/rules/xorg (after "! option = symbols"):

Code: ! option = symbols myshiftctrl1 = +mysym(shift_ctrl_1)

add option to xorg.conf :

Code: ! option = symbols Section "InputDevice" ... Option "XkbOptions" "myshiftctrl1" EndSection

Thank you cwarner7 for pointing me in the right direction. They say the devil is in the detail - in this case, literally! The default setting is English(United States). Although it seems easy to change the location it is not obvious that the default has to be removed!

Regards,

Tony Lee.
