Trial Software Has Control After Trial-Period

07/14/2010 10:50 AM

I downloaded AVG Antivirus-Freeware & installed "Full" without knowing what additional will be installed.

It also installed trial version of 'Windows System Security'. It started t pop up from the day one to remind it is a trial version while AVG Antivirus running smoothly.

After the the trial period it got control of my PC and not allowing to run any program; even Notepad.

I tried to un-install through 'Add/Remove' but just after opening of 'Add/Remove' it was shut down.

Tried following steps:

InSafeMood with Networking :

tried to see if anything in 'Add/Remove' related to it. Nothing found.

Tried to run AVG Antivirus but it did not run.

Un-installed Free AVG Antivirus with the hope that it will also un-install the problem thing but did not. It is there.

Tried to Restore from a previous Good-Boot. But there is no backup selection .

Tried to remove traces from Registry to un-able, but registry did not allowed to change or delete certain traces relating AVGs' 'Windows System Security'.

I took Laptop to service and told the story but they couldn't do except to tell me that it is not a virus.

Fellows have any clue to restore windows without formatting the drive. Have already lost the restore-CD

Laptop information:

Toshiba Model: EQUIUM A110-233

Serial # 86254323K

Pre-Installed: WindowsXp Home Edition Toshiba.

Thanks

It sounds like 'Windows Systems Security' is malware with a name deliberately picked to sound like "Microsoft Security Essentials".

If you can, go to the Microsoft website and download MSE. It will take care of viruses, spyware, adware, and malware in general.

The free version of AVG has been a pretty good anti-virus software, but MSE does more, and is also free.

Thanks & regards.

The position of MSE is:

It is available for approved testers for reinstall or install to another machine if the original download was not saved or if you are going to install to a different OS - 32 bit vs. 64 bit Vista/Win7 vs. XP.

Not sure if it's been corrected internally by AVG yet, but I guess there was a glitch where it was deleting important files needed to boot XP, although if what I read was correct, it was mostly in the UK. Is it giving any kind of error message as to why it's not working?

Last time my Lenovo decided to stop opening files, and didn't show a previous point to restore to, it ended up being that my new hard drive was faulty and needed to be replaced, which can be found by doing a HD Diagnostic, but even then, Toshiba doesn't have one integrated so it might be a nuisance to conclude to.

Computers can be pretty frustrating, I feel your pain Best of luck.

Thanks a lot to give a prompt reply.

I forgot to mention nother event befre it:

Same thing happened some 3 months before while I returned frm UK on visit tomy son.

I brought this laptop from him.

AS I had a Cds on which I had been burnng FreeSWs downloaded from time to time & it bulked o some 100 such CDs.

I found an old AVG Antivirus [some 10MBs program full installer, now the instalatin is online through some >3MB preinstaller file].

I installed it & scanned and the result was fine.

My system was reinstated.

Now I am In USA & have not brought any of those CDs as may be blocked by US Authorities.

If you downloaded a lot of Freeware, it wouldn't surprise me if some malware snuck in there. I'd follow Usbport's advice and try to get rid of it (if it's the problem).

Side note: Never download freeware from a url that involves "uberdownloads", sometimes you just get more than you bargained for..

Does it ask what program you would like to start notepad with? If so, try the exe fix on this site:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

If it works, you then have the wonderful job of trying to clean out some spyware. I usually use malwarebytes anti-malware, but opinions vary on which to use. Just make sure its not a virus posing as a legitimate virus removal utility.

If for some reason you can't apply the fix, there is another way to set file associations, but I can't remember it and don't have a windows box around.

http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-59028-remove-system-security This site has a good set of instructions for removal. I had the same issue with one of my son's computers and went through the whole scenario that you are going through.
