How To Convert Euro 3 Engine To Euro 4?

fine.. thanQ guest... but do u mean to say that there is no feasible way to convert euro 3 to euro 4??... and u said piston shape change... what change is it exactly??... changes in the contour of piston crown surface??.... also without this piston change, just by changing characteristics like injection timing, etc., can't the conversion be effected??... also can u give a brief idea of how engine makers abroad are able to build engines that meet the required emission norms like euro 4 or 5??... what is that main distinguishing factor that differentiates a euro 3 engine from a euro 4 one, for a given power output and torque rating???

I think LML in India have made 2 stroke engines compliant to Euro 4, so it could be possible.

It is unlikely that you will be able to convert, unless the manufacturer built their Euro 4 engine on the same platform as the Euro 3 engine. That will be your starting point of the investigation. Your best bet would be to take the car in to a tuning shop with a dynomometer and remap the engine management chip after fitting a modern cat converter and servicing the motor. Make sure they map the engine chip for economy and the predominant driving conditions you expose the car to. No point in setting it up like a hotrod.

If it's not running very clean and using oil, rebuild it first with high quality rings and bearings, reseat the valves. That will cost, but I GUESS the fuel saving will pay for it in about 30000miles at your fuel costs. AND you will be doing the environment a big favour.

If you are not familiar with building motors, check out your local college may offer a course in motor mechanics. It will most likely cost the same as one or two services at the dealership. I appreciate that some people are blessed with the inability to figure out how an manual eggbeater works: If you fall in that cat. let those that enjoy getting grease under their finger nails do the dirty work.....it will be cheaper! And Safer!

U mentioned that "built their Euro 4 engine on the same platform as the Euro 3 engine".. what does this platform refer to??... is it the bore-stroke charactersistics, etc., or based on materials used??... and also if the performance would be affected on conversion to E 4, then what basic difference in euro 4 compliant engines make them fit for "performance"- meaning top speed, acceleration, etc., that make up the vehicle's sportiness??... pls help!

Manufacturers may use the same engine block, crank, and head but upgrade the pistons and cams to improve on a successive model. Unless you know what to look for in the minute details that it takes to improve on and not destroy a good design, you would never spot the changes.

As other posts have mentioned, the shapes of the head and piston is what makes a difference in the firing efficiency over the complete period of the power stroke. You really need to spend some time in a tune up shop where race engines are being built, chatting the engineers to start to understand what we are all trying to explain to you.

This used to be an art, but with the new computer simulation programs available you can actually get an idea of what is happening in the engine. Spend a bit of time on Google there must be some stuff out there with good graphics.

There are companies claiming to do it with extra air injection into the exhaust before the Cat. They say they can achieve such effects as you desire. What the effect is on fuel consumption is I cannot say, never tried one.....

The main areas of focus will be intake and exhaust. Remember that E4 is more stringent than E3.

Hence the Cat con will have more layers for the gases to pass through with a different chemical element too. There is no appreciable difference in power.

But why do you want to convert an old Euro 3 engine to Euro 4 ?

I WANT TO CONVERT IT FROM EURO 5 TO EURO 3 BECAUSE THE DIESEL QUALITY IN MY COUNTRY IS TO LOW .

THE DPF WAS CLOGGED AND I WAS REMOVED IT , PLEASE PLEASE CAN YOU HELP ME .

Thats not the problem for CR4........its your problem......but its not clear for me why Sprinter has anything to do wit it!!

By the way, if you don't have any wiring to the filter, then removing it should probably fix your problems......does it not run OK?

Why buy a car with filter if you don't need it?
