High Voltage Transistor for TV

07/23/2010 4:29 AM

I am trying to repair some Television sets that I have been collecting.

Classic CRT televisions. I did that 35 years ago, when the tubes were in. For the TV hobbyists: is it possible that when this medium power high voltage transistor shorts between emitter and collector, nothing else is affected?

I have not been able to replace it yet, simply because I don't have one. (need to go find it in a different set) No fuses blown, The transistor is a planar epitaxial NPN SD2627 (sanyo) It has a damper diode in it and measures ca.0.3 ohms both ways between E and C.

I just wondered why nothing else seems to be defective.

The TV is a Broksonic 20" with VCR.

(Memorex) Thank you all

NTE has a crossreference for it.

problem with high voltage transistors is that they are meant for class c operation or short ON period and when they are somehow become ON for more than permitted time, they burn out. Thermal build up is fast and hence heat sensor is not good enough. Some fast DC current sensor and making the base to become ineffective perhaps can help.

Most likely you have a standard part number 2SD2627, on the smaller parts it became a common practice to drop the '2' and even the 'S' (I.e. the first two designations) because of space limitations. For whatever reason, some manufacturers did the same thing on larger parts as well (maybe trying to save on ink). Similar with the 1xxxxxx series since the two part's series were different types of parts, there wasn't any confusion as to which one was which. You should be able to find the original data sheet for the 2SD2627 on the web.

Many early transistor TVs had problems with horizontal and vertical output transistors failing, it took engineers awhile to get a handle on the correct parameters. There may be another, less obvious component failure lurking, a shorted turn in the coil it is driving could cause failure for instance. That was another common failure in some brands and models of the period.

Try this link: http://www.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/pdf/39200/SANYO/2SD2627.html

The TV is a broksonic, similar to a memorex and has a VHS recorder in it. I have some of these in the rental rooms. Two of the 4 had the same issue. I'll replace it as soon i receive the parts. Ordered in the US with Electronix On line. I hope the coil is still OK and that it was just non- dissipated heat. Thank you all for the help. Getting parts here is always tricky.

Just out of curiosity, how did you come to have an interest in reclaiming old CRT TV's? And what plans do you have for them?

I worked on OLD ones before, but these are between 6 and 2 years old. There is no real repair service on the Island here and Buying new ones is very expensive. (120% Tax) Just repairing to watch TV. Regards, D
