Thanks for the information - have some Bakelite - it is diferent to the touch, smell, sound, trying to come up with a new old line - it is new but has the feel of 1950 Bakelite - question again - is there a Bakelite press or was it all in the Die -
" is there a Bakelite press or was it all in the Die" We'll have to define terms.
To me, in this context a "die" is a split metal piece, with the half the cavity in each side. The cavity is machined to mold the piece of plastic into near net finished shape, with maybe some cleanup required at the parting line of the die. I prefer to use the term mold.
The press is the machine that holds the die and heats it to cure the plastic under pressure. It is fitted with hydraulic rams which hold the mold closed during cure. So, in order to produce a piece of jewelry, you'd need both.
I guess it would depend on potential sales, but there must be someone making an equivalent product. Maybe a Chinese company. They are known to copy about everything else.
The Bakelite patents were originally from a company called Durez in North Tonawanda, New York. Durez was bought out by Hooker Chemical which was bought out by Occidental Petroleum. I do not know the status of the patents but you could start with this information at Occidental and maybe they could help. The formulations should be on record with them.
Bakelite is a very old material so its formula can probably be found with some various internet search engines.
Also, I remember making this material is freshman or sophmore chemistry lab in college. That was over 45 years ago so your search is probably more history than scientific/patent orientated.
Good Luck

I remember making it as a high school project, just over 50 years ago. Unfortunately, the only ingredient I remember is carbolic acid, and I have no idea of the concentration...
