Differences Between Pipes

07/26/2010 12:44 AM

Hai all,

I have a basic doubt on the types of pipes used for plumbing. What's the difference between PVC, CPVC, GPVC & GI pipes. Which is the best among them along with economical factor too. Plz. do mention the advantages & disadvantages of them.

Thanks in advance.

PVC = polyvinyl chloride. It is corrosion resistant, comes in various wall thicknesses/pressure ratings/schedules, and is economical. The maximum allowable temperature is about 140°F, so it is not generally used for hot water.

CPVC = chlorinated PVC, similar to PVC but with higher temperature rating. It is used for hot water and electrical conduit.

GPVC I don't yet know.

These plastics can be cut and assembled easily, usuallly with solvent-welded (glued) fittings.

GI = galvanized iron (actually steel) is somewhat corrosion resistant. It is typically threaded, with threaded fittings. It is more rigid than PVC, so pipe hangers can be spaced farther apart. It is also good for compressed air, whereas PVC is not.

Also used in plumbing is ABS pipe for drains and vents. It has minimal if any pressure rating, but is less costly than PVC.

That's just a quick overview.

Screwed GI might not be the best solution for potable water...

For cost comparisons, the best way is to phone some local suppliers and simply ask.
