Insulation Value for 1.2 MVA Generator

07/26/2010 8:43 AM

Hi, anyone can tell me what should be the insulation value of 1.2 MVA, 460 volts, 60 Hz generator. We test hi-pot to main stator of that generator. Testing voltage is 1900 volts and time is about one minute. The result is 700 mega ohms. So, is it enough insulation for this generator ? Regard.. AUNG

700 mega-ohm is very good insulation for 460V generator. It is more than enough.

In addition to the measuring the insulation, I also would like to ask you to measure and verify the P.I (Polarization Index).

See the previous thread http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/45827 for more about P.I.

I agree that 700 Mega Ohm is good for performing high pot test. As a rough thumb rule minimum IR value in Mega Ohms can be taken as = test voltage value in Kilo volts + 1. For example for High pot test at 2KV, minimum value should be = 2+1 = 3 MOhm
