Car Stereo

07/28/2010 8:49 AM

My son has a 97 Taurus with 6 cd remote changer in the trunk which has never worked (will take the disk but the head unit will not play or recognize that a disk is in the magazine). Cost to get this "inspected" starts at $60 and goes up from there. The dash unit is an integrated package containing not only the head unit but also hvac controls. His version has the electronic controls, not the more common rotary knob setup. I have seen aftermaket kits that allow for a standard din radio to be installed in the oval housing and existing hvac controls relocated from the original cluster to the new piece. There are many of these vehicles in junk yards with the manual controls that are available for $15-20 but I'm unsure if I can retrofit the manual style controls into a vehicle originally outfitted with a more "sophisticated" electronic style control system (shop manual wiring diagrams have commonalities but diverge with control module that also takes input from remote temperature sensors for external temperature, auto speed adjust of fan, etc. which he doesn't need). My alternative is locating a used Ford cd changer and hope it works. Any thoughts or recommendations? Not looking to spend a lot of money. Thanks.

Unless your son wants to use the CD player part of the system for nostalgic reasons, it seems simpler / better to me to use one of those off-the-shelf FM transmitters that plays from either an SD card, USB stick or MP3 player and broadcasts to the car's radio. This way he can store much more audio than 6 CDs and easily take it with him when he leaves the car. And all the installation you have to do is plug it in.

Here's an example of what I mean. Usual disclaimer: I'm not endorsing particular models or vendors, it pays to research & shop around, etc.

If it were me, I'd replace the in-dash unit with one that can play a CD but -- more importantly -- has a jack to allow an mp3 player to be plugged in. It's pretty easy to rip the songs off of CDs and convert them then to mp3 files and store them in a mp3 player. Lots of phones/pads/pods etc can store and play mp3 files. Even if your son decides to sell the car at some point, he still has the mp3 player with all of the songs on it and he can use that in the next car he gets. (And of course, take the new in-dash unit out of the Taurus if he want to.)

Here's a quick example from Best Buy for a Sony unit for $100. (I have no connection with Sony or Best Buy.) Not sure if this would fit easily into the Taurus, but the folks at Best Buy could give you some advice.

I would personally recommend a car CD radio that actually plays MP3 CDs directly as well as having either a plug for an iPlayer or a USB connection for a USB Stick.....

They cost very little nowadays.

Then he can sell the old CD Changer as spares and gain some volume in the trunk!!!

Playing MP3 CDs really means no need for a changer at all. 10-12 hours of music on one CD. I carry about 30 MP3 CDs in the car for all moods.....

With re-writable CDs, you can make your own music show for any journey....and burn it again another day with different music.....

I bought such a radio for my caravan about 6 years ago, it still works GREAT and cost only about the equivalent of $100. Today there are ones even cheaper on the market if price is a problem......

Good day kbp, I had a similar problem (this may not be your problem, but check) with my Audi and soon enough found out that on some shuttles one has to insert the disks, "optical or read side up". I felt like an idiot, but then again, RTFM sometimes helps. regards, Leon

Long ago I used to repair CD players, including units like this one. You'd be amazed at the number of people who made that same mistake. :)

Hi guest, yes I was amazed at how stupid I felt once I figured it out. I kept swearing at my own stupidity. 'Nobody's perfect' comes to mind, but but I felt that overlooking something so simple, really took the cake.

You should not waste your time and money on old technology. I have a great player that I can let you have at wholesale pricing. It is a very low mileage Sony 8 track player. But you have to act NOW. Prices like this can't last.

My inventory of 8 track players is limited. As the numbers dwindle, I will no longer offer them at discounted prices.
