Fuel Alcohol Distillation Through Stripper Column

07/29/2010 3:09 PM

We are involved in a fuel alcohol distillation project through a stripper column. Distillation is causing corrosion of the copper condenser coils. Our beer is neutral. The process is using sugar, diamonium phosphate, muriatic acid and after fermentation baking soda to a ph of 7. What is causing this corrosion of the copper condenser coils?

Could you describe the corrosion in more detail?

The corrosion of copper by chloride ions is well known. Muriatic acid (good old-fashioned name) is hydrochloric acid (HCl), which is complete ionized to H+ and Cl- in aqueous solution. Whether the solution is neutral or not does not matter - those Cl- ions are present and cannot be removed.

I have seen this corrosion of copper coils in air conditioning condensers on rooftops of buildings near the ocean. Saltspray (laden with sodium chloride) in the air gets into the recirculating water system and eats away the copper coils. A typical H&V engineer would never give such considerations a thought!

Could you consider using a different acid? Perhaps sulphuric.

Thanks for the info. I passed this on to the appropriate person and we will be taking your advice in the near future. The distiller was disassemblied yesterday and is in route to a new location.

How disappointing,...... I saw the words alcohol and stripper both in one title and thought "Now here is a Friday thread I can relate to."

and I thought for sure by now, someone would have asked for a few cases of said beer for "analysis"
