NiCD Battery for Power Station (SPH220)

08/05/2010 5:09 AM

have a NiCd battery(saft Product) of 1.2V nominal voltage that was shipped in for our power station. The manual clearly stated that if the battery is filled with its electrolyte (potassium hydroxide) and discharged from the factory the battery can be stored for over two years before it is been used.I measured the battery voltage and got 1.241, i was surprised because i was thinking since the battery was discharged and transported down, the voltage level should be lower or maybe 1V.Is this assumption correct?is there any other thing to check if the battery was actually transported discharged?

Without checking directly, but I am sure that that is the state of a Nicad battery, fully discharged. Going any lower will damage it.

This is much the same as ANY battery, except dry charged LA batteries....all have a minimum voltage, considered to be then fully discharged. Not to be discharged any lower as damage WILL occur.

If it had been shipped "unfilled" you may have seen no voltage, but filled there will always be voltage....

NiCD batteries (and NiMh batteries as well) will be damaged if depleted below their 20% capacity mark, and will also be damaged if they are routinely charged above 80% capacity as well.
