Microsoft Vista

08/05/2010 1:07 PM

About 3 years ago I brought a new computer that was pre loaded with the Vista operating system.

This system is now no longer supported by Microsoft. When you buy a computer you get a license agreement that you have to accept to use the operating system, and this agreement / license is for 10 years.

So my question is:

A) Do i contact the computer manufacturer and ask them to upgrade the operating system as it still has about 75% of the license to run.

B) Should I contact Microsoft and ask them to continue to support thier operating system until the rest of the license runs out.

C) Just go out and buy windows 7. And have the same thing happen again in a couple of years time.

D) Change to another operating system.

Thank you for any comments that you may make. Good or Bad.

M$ support ended for Vista without SP2. You must install SP2 to receive continued support.

If your copy in not genuine, there may be a problem; otherwise upgrade. There is no cost.

If you can get Vista off your machine, something like Dos 6.22 will perform the same functions quite admirably. If in need of a nice interface, I commend WFWG to you. It is indeed a sterling program, and will give you many years of joy.

Seriously your joking right.

If in need of a nice interface, I commend WFWG to you

I cannot recommend this due to the fact that most if not all modern and even recent software and hardware (along with internet security programs like virus checkers and internet browser upgrades) are not backwards compatible with an operating system that is over 6 years old and predates Windows 95!

A little clever reply but not really factual.

All big companies use a modern OS. Check Reliance, Essar, Jindal, Birla and hundreds of others. I expect that all use SAP of the latest variety.

The public sector banks are in a different world all together.

My advise is as per reply #1 above.

If you are in doubt (I am assuming this computer is for business use) then consult the Microsoft website for clarification first. Don't just go and upgrade or downgrade your operating system, Vista with SP2 works fine and is still supported with regular free upgrades and windows updates.

I run vista at home with no problems and we run an even older operating system at work - Windows XP (like many, many other businesses), and that is still supported by Microsoft.

The oldest OS supported by MS is Windows xp sp3. XP sp2 and Windows 2000 fell off the extended support list earlier this year. For all practical purposes, support means that periodic security patches and upgrades are generally pushed out to users the second Tuesday of every month with occasional patches outside the normal schedule.

For the OP: Point your browser to microsoft.com, click on windows update and follow yje instructions on the screen.

I happily still use WinXP Sp3.

But once WinXP drops off the supported list, I am going to Linux (unless someone gives me a copy of Win7 32 bit, fully functioned, which I seriously doubt anyway....

Linux is the way to go, but as I still have a large software investment under WinXP, I will keep that still running, but disconnected from the Internet at all times....

Vista was known to be Crap useless, even before it was fully released....you only needed to read the press reports.....it was even slower than XP in most areas.....

Win7 is far far better according to most reports....

Hey Andy, Just to further the input on W7.

I have been using it for about 6 months now, 32 bit version here at work and the 64bit version on my laptop at home.

I have found it to be pretty glitch free and the upgrade from on my vista machine went pretty flawless. I have to say that MS got it pretty right on this one and I am happy to say that I have also added 2 other desktops at home to the W7 list. All are working with no issues thus far.

One not though. On the laptop running 64 bit i did have a small issue with the video card driver. Apparently ATI is not very good at getting its 64 bit drivers working as well as W7 does. I hope that this changes pretty soon. Even thought the graphics card kinda glitches every now and then W7 seems to recover from it nicely and does so within a matter of seconds.

Just my 2 bits. (pun intended)

That is basically what I have heard from other users.

Its a financial reason why I will go to Linux eventually as I can still use my slowly aging PCs (all 4) and I am trying to use EMC2 on a CNC machine.....also a Linux program....

But as I said, if someone presents me with a copy of Win7, I will use that instead or as well as!!

Thanks for your interesting and informative post.

My computer is only a year and a half old.

Re: Microsoft Vista

it IS supported, and the updates are PROOF of that. you have to actually INSTALL the updates however.

Anyone saying that it is no longer supported is either badly misinformed or trying to use a cracked/pirated version that won't accept updates (most likely scenario).

As to the idiot (yes, I called you an idiot) saying to run MS DOS or WFWG3.11. you have got to be the most foolish idiot I've heard of, bar none. NO MODERN HARDWARE will run these antiques. There are no drivers written for them. Even if you DIDN'T connect it to the internet (not a bad idea given the number of wide open security holes these antiques had in them.) finding a machine that would run them (that will still operate) would be a real trick. and then finding software that will run on them is a further trick. NOTHING written or built since about 2000 will still run these OS's without running as a virtual machine inside an emulator.
