A New Acronym?

08/16/2010 5:06 PM

I don't know if this is actually "new", but in going through inventory today I "invented" a new acronym. Some items that have been sitting on the far production bench for a few weeks have the status of "Good As Far As We Know". The status has the acronym "GAFAWK". The acronym not only is a good description of status but, without violating the political correctness policy, it also makes me feel like I am expressing my inner feelings about stock sitting around. Say "GAFAWK, GAFAWK, GAFAWK" several times real fast and I think you will understand what I mean.

Taking the time to post this was inspired by http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/2446 "CRIMINAL" and http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/58701 "acronymectomy".

Now we have to dream up terms that make the word, "yourself".

It took 20-30 seconds for me to figure it out. It's been a long day.

You have a problem with demented crows? I'll have you know that some of my best friends in college were demented crows. I'll admit that their music is a little weird, well ... actually they are a little weird. But that doesn't mean that some fur ball loving bloke from the other side of the big pond shouldn't have some bloody respect for them.

Actually, I didn't understand anything after the smile face. Something got lost in the over-the-pond translation. I just thought it would be fun to be offended. I wonder if the moderator will remove this personal attack.

The problem with GAFAWK is that when said aloud fast, it would sound a lot like "Get F**ked", not something to be said in polite company ordinarily, although that is something that I'd really love to tell some new (and hopefully by now expelled) members from Pakistan here.

Seems similar to the word for the cuss words as used in the comics. Now I have to find where I hid the several strange words that came from the comics writers.

I found where I put it, so I'm replying to my own comment. I will list the "words," but not yet include the meanings--I'll let you think about them a while! Hint: they came from The Lexicon of Comicana by Mort Walker. I bet the spell check goes nuts!

Here goes: Grawlix, Emanata, Dites, Briffits, Blurgits & swalloops, Agitrons

But it means pretty much the same as GEFGoW, or "Good Enough For Government Work," a line we used often in a certain National Laboratory.

I have a new acronym for the writer. SERREPSCP stands for SERVICEABLE, REPAIRABLE, SCRAP. I cannot understand why on your inventory you hold items of which you do not know the status of. Check them out and apply tags to them under the above headings. Your methods can only lead to futher production losses in the event of break downs not knowing the status of your equipment.

thats fine if your only checking one item and its got rid of but in my experience these have a habit of getting back into the system even after they have been binned. just wondering if you hold a inventory of equipments and carry on the same way as the writer judging by tour sarcastic comment i feel you do

I'm sorry you feel Im always being sarcastic, I generally just try to be informative and amusing. (Mind my signature line should alert you to the potential)
I'm always happy to bow to those with experience in a particular field.
And you are correct I don't deal with large inventories of equipment.
No offense intended.
I am suitably chastised.

Not if the scrap is too expensive or too good to throw away. Then it gets set in the back corner until you need it for something.

Mind you, the back corner does get crowded a lot of the time!

"I cannot understand why on your inventory you hold items of which you do not know the status of. Check them out and apply tags to them . . ."

You have never worked where priorities require that some tasks are moved to the back burner (that is, deferred until several other tasks are completed)? - and where every task is in one of two categories: "HOT HOT HOT" or "not now, not yet". I would guess that nearly everyone else here has worked under such conditions! Individual tasks can be expected to randomly swap categories a bit faster than you can keep up. To speed up inspection, make use of AHJEI (Aw, Heck: Just Eyeball It) instead of making actual measurements and checking them against standards.

It is a matter of growing up in a family where swearing was never tolerated. If you swore, even a small "damn" my mother would take me to the washroom and wash my mouth out with soap. It was a common practice at one time. I have heard young girls at the local mall that could use a similar discipline at home. Some of the foul language is now in everyday lexicon. I am no saint and can swear with the best in locker rooms. Swearing tends to demean the perpetrator and if used too frequently tends to limit the effect of the swear word. I am sure other CR4ers have been raised with similar morals and consequences. Others may have used a swear box, where if you cussed it would cost a quarter. You eventually learn to bite your tongue rather than swear. Think about the people you talk, it is likely you hold those who limit their swearing in higher esteem. That said there are a lot of good people that swear a ton and are still respected.

I suggested getting the soap because he didn't mask f**k as has been common on CR4 threads. Swearing Offers A peril (SOAP).

Interesting view, some maintain that swearing shows a limited vocabulary.
Steven Fry a very well educated man, maintains that the opposite is true and swearing is a legitimate lingustic tool, after all they are just sounds, it's how we interpret them which matters.
The sounds themselves are not intrinsically good or bad, a swear word well placed can have tremendous humourous impact, but then who gives a f#$@?

The classic or bench mark on the absurdity of swear words has to be George Carlin's monologue on "Filthy Words." (aka the 7 words you can't say on TV) The actual transcript used by the US Supreme Court ruling is of course not as funny as one of his performances.
