Solar Array

I am building ground mount solar array in toronto ontario canada. I need some help in calculating the wind load for this structure. Could someone please help me

start by defining how much surface area you need. then determine what local codes say the maximum wind you must withstand must be. since the panels at your latitude will be very close to vertical I would assume that they are vertical for math purposes (it will give you some small margin as well.) then resort to F=MA to calculate the force that would be applied to the panel at a given maximum windspeed. I would then at a minimum double or triple that force and then design the supports to withstand that double or triple load. (again local codes may dictate even higher safety factors. ALWAYS follow local codes as a minimum. you can build it stronger and it will only cost more but nobody will get hurt. but if you build it too weak, someone might.

Hello Guest,

My suggestion to you is to first obtain a copy of the American Society of Civil Engineers manual ASCE 7. You can do a Google Search for this manual and download it for free (except the latter versions). I can also send to you an older Powerpoint presentation file based on ASCE 7-98 if needed; I'll need your personal/primary email address to do so. The procedure for calculating wind load is presented within a chapter. The manual includes a minimum design wind speed map that only depicts wind speeds throughout the USA; it doesn't cover Canada. You most likely will have a conservative wind loading if you choose to utilize a 100 MPH wind speed. I live in the mid-Hudson Valley of New York, southeast of you, and I designed my pole mounted solar array using 100 MPH.....of course up in Canada you can may away with much less design wind speed. Also, check with your local municipality regarding Building Code mandating minimum design wind speeds and horizontally projected wind pressures acting on structures.

If you search the WWW you will find that most manufactured solar PV array frames on the market (for pole mounts) are either designed for 90 MPH or 100 MPH wind speeds, and most are manufactured from Aluminum bar stock or channels. If your design wind speed is greater than 100 MPH, then the array frame is usually specially designed and manufactured for you, naturally at a greater cost.

If this is a pole mounted structure be extra careful designing the steel pole and the concrete foundation to resist bending, shear and overturning. I hope you are well-versed and practiced in structural analysis and design calculations, otherwise I suggest that you obtain the design serviced of a currently Registered/Licensed Canadian Professional Engineer who is qualified in the Structural Engineering speciality.

Hi CaptMoosie. Sorry for the delay in replying Thank you for your great advice Re wind loads for the sola structure in Toronto. The company I am working for is looking for a free lance Mechanical Engineer to do design work for them if you are interested Please let me know. Presently we are working on Sign structure 65feet tall and Billboard 48feet x 13feet High Thanks Jeff Andrews jeff@almononline.com

dear sir, i am doing project on design of 1mw solar power plant in india and the solar panel also should work as a sun tracker.a tracker design is to be developed based on rows of east-west tracking with multiple row configuration.i need to calculate the wind load,torque. and the dimension of the panel is (21metres*3metres)each.there are 6 panels in parallel and hight 3 feet from ground.so please help me to calculate the wind load ,torque for solar panel......my email id <email removed>

Hello Jeff,

You're very welcome regarding the wind loading info.

And thank you very much about pointing out the job opening. I surmise that your company is located in Ontario, Canada, correct? If so, I will have to turn down the offer as I am only presently licensed and registered to perform Professional Engineering services in New York State, and have never been licensed in Canada.

Also, I am a Civil/Structural Engineer, and not a Mechanical Engineer. IMHO, a Canadian-licensed Professional Engineer who is a qualified Structural Engineer would be the most ideal to design the billboard that you have mentioned.

Again, I offer my thank you to you and your firm for the job offer. It was greatly appreciated and I wish I could take you up on the offer!
