Anti-syphon hole

Hi can anyone tell what is the purppose of anti-syphon hole on a dip pipe for filling purpose which is on top of the tank roof.

If the fill pipe comes from a lower point than the fluid level in the tank, leakage from the pipe (or disconnection of hoses or fittings) could siphon out all the fluid down as far as the bottom of the dip pipe. The anti-siphon hole prevents this.

In the UK it is a statutory requirement for any tank filled from a potable (drinking) water supply to prevent contamination by siphoning back from the tank.

...for which an actual air gap is required, not an <...Anti-syphon hole...>. The requirement is there to prevent bacteria that might be present in the <...tank...> from contaminating the <...potable (drinking) water supply...>.
