Guests Ability to Vote OT?

08/29/2010 5:54 PM

To Admin,

Because of a recent thread I posted to (http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/59197/Centrifugal-Pump), I have a "suggestion".

I propose that Guests not be allowed to vote a post Off-Topic. I have no problem with there being Guests, but why give them the ability to anonymously vote OT?

Anyone else with me on this?

Huh? Are they? I just logged-out and checked, and as a 'guest' I did not see a box to rate OT for some of the replies on other postings. Did I miss something?

It appears to me that all voting is anonymous for logged-in members, whether giving a GA or OT, but a member can choose to reply with his/her log-in name or anonymously. Is this what you want to change?

Guests cannot vote. They have no voting rights.

Try logging off, then come back to this thread, and vote this OT (or GA).

Be sure to refresh after voting, when checking your results.

I don't know why, that post was very on topic......was it initially mark OT from the poster?.....considering it had 5 OT votes

Upon investigation, I can confirm that brich marked his comment OT (which explains the 5 OT votes you recognized).

As others have pointed out, Guests do not have the ability to vote. Period. Neither GAs or OTs.

This person self-voted himself to 5 OT votes. There were no malicious OT guests...

OK. My bad. So, if you mark your own post OT, you start out with a score of 5? If so, why 5?

Have you since edited his post to be on-topic? His post now has a neutral rating.

This just kind of took me by surprise as I could see no reason that he would designate his own post as off-topic. OK, maybe because he was admonishing the OP. I wouldn't have given a similar reply by me an OT rating though!

Thanks for the reply Jaxy!

Haha. No, 5 different people felt his comment was "on-topic" and voted him a "GA"... enough to bring his comment to neutral.

I have no idea why 5 is the magic number. I believe at 3 OT votes the comment becomes hidden.

5

5.....

Settled. That makes it unaminous......as one hears cr4 admin at the meeting heads to exit door like a herd of water buffalo crossing a stream.

Chill - it's been like this since forever - they ain't ganging up. Check with one of the founders (if any are still around):

The Architect mgaulin

Lead Editor Chris Leonard

The Engineer Roger Pink

Moose

There are plenty of others - check it out here.

Jus' coz you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

Don't get me started on the shortcomings of the 'net on a 'phone! Life's too short!

(apologies also for teaching Gran'ma to suck eggs )

Re: Guests Ability to Vote OT?

Don't mind me - I've just got the 'ump because I spent half an hour yesterday logging on to CR4 from my mobile, to find I couldn't get any further than the home page. Seems that the Great Unwashed had run out of (Reading) festival, and were calling their Mums to say "come and get me", thereby hogging all the bandwidth.

[I was sitting near enough the bar to have one of the staff pass me a pint].

Sorry everyone! I guess I had an emotional "reaction" to the post referred to. (sorry for ending that sentence with a preposition).

I'm glad that my suggestion was taken into account retroactively!

And we can not report either unless I log in.

So don't blame us for that either, it has to be one of the coterie who did it.
