Assuming you don't have time to get your ham radio ticket, here's what I'd do:

If you are travelling in areas with cellular network, get a GSM/CDMA dual mode phone (do a search Motorola GSM/CDMA). If you are really remote, then your left with satellite phone as your option.

To reduce cost, use text messaging instead of incurring long distance charges.

Those who succeed, fail, try, can't be bothered, know it all, are uselees, teach, learn, help, hinder, give advice, take advice, the willing the un-willing, those who pay those that scrounge, the lazy, hard working, charitable, mean, ad infanitum.
