Do you have administrator rights?

The main problem is that you are still using Windows...Microsoft does not like to let you use your computer for things they don't approve of...

I've had similar problems - so short of switching to say Linux what can be done?

Switch to Mac? Switch to BSD? Find an old computer that runs Windows 98? Switching to Linux is probably the most cost effective- and some of your Windows programs may actually work better. At least, you can install them...

Right click on file and choose "Run as administrator". If you are not the administrator, get him to install it. As suggested by others, switch to Linux. You have more control of your computer and lots of help in the community.

Microsoft does not like to let you use your computer for things they don't approve of...

Switching to a Mac is not going to solve that, they lock down the OS even more than Microsoft (as hard as that may be to believe).

As others have said, if you are not running as Administrator, many programs will not install. Another note, from the error message you are getting, it looks like you might be trying to install software directly from the internet or a webpage, so the security settings of Internet Explorer could be stopping you as well.

If you don't have it sorted out yet, it would help if you could post more information on what you are doing, for starters, what's the software you are trying to install? What version of Windows are you running (XP, Vista, Windows 7)? Vista and 7 both have UAC (user account controls) that sometimes needs to be given permission/overridden/shut down when installing software.

Get back to us with a few more details.

The permissions for folder c:\Windows\InternetLogs do not allow the installation to create or modify a file in the folder. Right click the folder...select the 'security' tab...click the 'users' user name and click the allow full control check box. This should allow your app permission to the folder and the install should get past this point.

Ok just a comment you can rate as off topic if you like.

Once you get over your MS bashing lets try asking some relevent questions. So far only Stevem and a guest seem to be on the ball.

  1. Is the computer YOURS?
  2. If not do you have permission or authority to download & install software?

Now if the answer to the first question is yes, you guys can continue with your advice. If not you are perhaps aiding the OP in an action that is illadvised at best and illegal at worst.
