The Earth's Mantle to be Studied

03/07/2007 8:43 AM

British scientists have embarked on a mission to study a huge area on the Atlantic seabed where the Earth's crust is mysteriously missing and instead is covered with dark green rock from deep inside the planet.

The 12-member expedition to take an unprecedented peek at Earth's mantle left the Canary Islands on Monday with a new high-tech vessel and a robotic device named Toby that will dig up rock samples at the site and film what it sees.

The main site — there is at least one other in roughly the same area and a third is suspected — is about three miles below the surface of the Atlantic and located about 2,000 nautical miles southwest of the Canaries.

Here is the Story

Didn't we see this on Doctor Who? ;-)

It is about time for us to concentrate on the green holes close by first before looking at distant black holes.

The expedition will be UK government sponsored because its Green. This will be part of their going green initiative to save the planet. So far though GB (that's Gordon Brown, not George Bush or Great Britain) has not yet thought of how to further tax the long suffering UK tax payer, but I'm sure he'll come up with some way to make us pay for this expedition "for our own good".

I'm sure GB (that's George Bush, not Gordon Brown or Great Britain) will find a way to spin these holes as being the result of super-secret Canadian WMD tests, go in and take their oil, blame it on Iran, and then tax Great Britain to pay for the increased "security" at our airports and to underwrite the costs of 100,000 additional troops in Iraq. This will keep George pretty busy for awhile, so he'll have to relinquish Tony Blair's marionette strings to Dick Cheney. This will really suck because Dick was planning that week to go hunting at the Johnson ranch with some Democrat attorneys who're smart enough to wear Kevlar jackets and lexan headgear. (Fool me once...) Have I missed anything?

What I want to know is what are the constituents of this 'dark green rock from deep inside the planet'?
