Most industrial inkjet coders need the printhead to be fixed horizontally, and at a fixed distance from the substrate, so not very portable.

Perhaps this is what you need: http://inkjetcoder.com/handheld.html

That's the kind of thing I was thinking of. Well found.

To be honest, I had never seen or heard of anything like it before, and doubted that it would be possible either with inkjet or laser, so I was surprised when it popped up. Now I'm just wondering if I could use one at home for marking all the kids belongings, or perhaps even the kids themselves?

Saw something like it on TV ages ago, but haven't heard of it since.

Marking the kids makes sense - they all look the same to me .

Regarding the kids; my first thought was an identifier and data marking to aid with identification, location and delivery of the not so little blighters, including data such as: name, age, sex, approximate value, destination, departure time, eta, etc (all linked to a database and calendar on the PC). I thought a barcode on the forehead might work best.

My second thought was an identifier , so as not to lose the dear things. I've since reconsidered this one.

You might include the name of the kid's father, or leave a blank space if you're not sure.

We already know what the kids are like, and they are already mixed-up enough anyway.

So they don't need labels on their foreheads telling us they are b**tards!

TAMPOPRINT labeling might be the solution for you.

Cheers

Tampoprint is a German company with subsidiaries and distributors worldwide. If you google it you should find a local distributor.

However, I don't think it is the way to go. Tampoprint is a pad-printer. This is fine if you are printing exactly the same thing over and over again, otherwise you have to keep changing pads,m and each pad is made individually. They are also not very portable.

How portable do you need to be?

We use one of the Domino ink jet printers which is fairly self contained but we have mounted it on a small machinists trolley so that it can easily be moved to the point of use. Once in place it only need a mains supply to operate.

Another one:

http://www.ebs-inkjet.com/english/produkty_karta.php?id=134

A company I was visiting in Germany this week wanted to show me their latest product, just launched. Text is programmed from PC or laptop via USB. Depending on what you want to print, and what you want to print on, you might find the characters rather large, and a rather crude dot-matrix, but it works well. Price around 2000 Euros.
