Hardness Tester

03/09/2007 9:19 AM

Our company is looking to purchase a portable hardness tester for use around the plant. We will just be using it to verify that our suppliers are supplying us with the hardness they say they are (we have had issues with this in the past). We are not looking for an extremely precise tester, just one that will give us a good idea that the hardness is close to the values quoted. In my quick research I have seen units ranging in the $1000 to $2500 range. Is this what I should expect to pay for a tester that will meet our needs? Also can anyone recommend any specific companies that make and sell a tester that would work well but not be overkill for our situation?

Buy yourself an Equitip hardness tester. It is a hand held device and is about the same size, wheight and dimension as a ball point pen. Just type the name of the instrument in to google and you will get all your answers

Hardness of what ? If it's concrete or something like that , rock engineers use what I think is called a schmidt hammer.

You remind me of someone asking:

"How much will it cost us drive the car?".

You want a serious answer, make a serious question.

My first impression was for an instrument testing the hardness of water. This can be tested "scientifically" using a bar of soap. When i was young the "hard water" seems pretty soft to me - and i presumed hard water = ice.

After reading further

use a hammer.

if it splash it is very soft

if it makes "thud" it is soft

if it shatters it is hard but brittle.

if it cracks it is almost hard.

if it last it is hard.

etc.

What a bunch of ignorant replies!

"We are not looking for an extremely precise tester" That means your probably looking for a durometer. The prices you mentioned sound about right. The pen versions may cost a bit less with a sacrifice of accuracy. Also, you'll need to calibrate them yearly, sooner if you use them daily.

Give Instron a call, they should be able to tell you exactly what you need to know. www.instron.com

That might be good for your hardhat or skateboard , but the original question wasn't very specific about the intended use.

Which hardness do you test?HRC,SHORE or others?

For above $1000 hardness tester,i think its HRS.For Shore hardness,it maybe be just about $100.

To first post, you havnt pointed out what hardness you will test? if its metal or nonmetal? if you want to test hb,hrb, hrc,hv,hsd etc, I recommend HL1 type hardness it drop down to your price range and can exchange these defferent hardness values.portable with micro printer. its testing range: hl300-900,hb80-650,hrb17.5-101,hrc20-68,hv-1200 friendly operation and digital display. if you are interesting in it pls write to info@ndt.cn if you want to know the hardness of concrete. you can select rebounder, its called schmidt harmer as well. it has pointer type and digital display. which one do you prefer?
