Pool Pump Motor: Any Creative Alternative Uses?

09/27/2010 12:03 AM

I have a 2 HP Pool Pump Motor (230 V). If you could recommend a creative use of it, then I wont sell it in craigslist for 100 bucks..

Cant have the largest fountain in the neighbourhood because of overhead power lines :-(

Any cool ideas?

Depending on the beer, that's more like 5 cases here. I feel sorry for you.

don't feel sorry, maybe I'm better off, +- N$ 7.50(Namibia Dollars) = 1 U$, then 100 bucks = 750 of mine, then I get approx. seven and a half cases here. (we might be even if there was a quality issue involved. as mine is supposed to be "Premium African Quality" which I doubt.)

The power lines resist rain, do they not? Go for the dancing waters and the matching G.F. Handel music!

I use one for the sprinklers, combined with the pool. Good for about 10 stationary sprinklers for the lawn.

The height of your fountain will depend on the type. Mine goes about 5 meter high when the 2" output is restricted to 1"1/4 and the impeller is free of pebbles. (with 26 Ft head - suction) Now I see: you only have the motor

I used one on my drill press, but it runs the wrong way. And you'll need to open it and peel down some windings to reconnect it.

My type could not reverse without soldering. But the drill press is powerful now. (had a 3/4 HP before)

Also good for a saw plus shaft.

A heavy duty siren

or a rotating carnival attraction on your front lawn.

When I was a kid I helped my dad build a rock garden in the backyard complete with fish pond and waterfall. It was easier in New Mexico to stack rocks than grow grass. A 2HP pump could get you a mini Niagra Falls!

Hide it up on the roof with a big rose (one of those things on a watering can spout), and add a secret switch so you can say:-

"Look Honey we can't go shopping it's raining; better just watch the ball game on the box."

Build a water feature with a cascading waterfall into a small lake or pond with a sandy beach & palm trees with Jasmin wafting through the air & a bamboo hut as a bar with thatched roof & seats to lay on and drink your cocktails to watch the sun set,or fit a hose to it to wash your car.

If you have a lake, pond, or stormwater retention pond nearby, use it to water your lawn and you will probably not have to fertilize it again. I wish I lived near the retention ponds in my subdivision. Everybody over-fertilizes and all of the nutrients run off into the ponds. Plus we haven't received any rain in over 7 weeks and my grass is almost dead. I won't water it because we have the highest water rates in the state and don't agree with using treated water for lawn purposes.

I have a 1 hp 3600 rpm pump motor with a 6 inch wire brush wheel attached against the shoulder with two large washers and a nut on the threaded end. Does a beautiful job of removing rust from steel; but it does require some caution in use and especially protective goggles because wires will break and fly off with enough force to stick in your clothes if you work in line with the plane of the brush. Other types of wheels could be fitted; but I'd be cautious about cutoff wheels or a large (5-6" dia) grinding wheel without a blade guard of some kind.

Note the position of the unit at right angles to the way most of us set up these things. In some ways this offers advantages for access to surfaces to be cleaned or buffed. Simple wood base, angle iron catches the lower two flange mounting holes and a pipe strap ties the back of the motor down. See pic below. ... Ed Weldon

G'day all, Ed's shown us a good one.(GA to Ed) Heed the safety precautions though, recently a workshop foreman in our town lost his eye whilst demonstrating without any safety glasses, how to polish a piece to his staff. (Unfortunate!!!, it hit the papers, sh-t, I even know the b-gger!)

Ok, thanks for the options.. nothing stood out spectacular except for the beer..(Maybe make a beer fountain for the next big street party)

So I am going to sell it

Although I did think of somehow making a high pressure washer for the driveway and window, but doesnt it also require airpressure? ...the problem is the 230V.. dont have any outlets in my house with that rating.

Thanks for playing..

It would work fine for a pressure washer. I have one hard-piped to a cistern where I collect rainwater. The pump discharge goes to an outdoor spigot. I can attach a pressure washer hose & lance, a gutter-cleaning lance or a lawn sprinkler set. It's one of the most useful diy projects I have, ranking right up there with the thermoelectric beer fridge.

Considering your last remark, this seems to be a clear cut case. Sell = 100, re-invest in beer = contentment (the added bonus of knowing that happiness can now be kept in a fridge.)

Hmm.. how about a personal fire-hydrant. Maybe there is a market for personal fire-hydrants in the US.

" Maybe there is a market for personal fire-hydrants in the US."

There certainly is such a market in rural areas that are densely populated and prone to wildfires. Seriously, the needed plumbing hookup to a water storage tank (used for a domestic water supply fed by a well pump) costs around a thousand dollars for just the brass and stainless steel plumbing hardware. It sure would be nice if someone could develop the necessary hardware out of less expensive stuff.
