Ash Conveying System

09/30/2010 12:03 PM

Dear friends,

I am Vivek kumar working as a Design Engineer.(Reviewing Ash Handling System Design)

I need your help in selecting the capacity of compressor to convey ash for 100m length and a height of 10 m. Ash generation rate is 80 TPH.Bulk density of ash is 850 Kg/M3.

kindly help me to select a suitable capacity of compressor to convey the ash with detailed calculations

suitable capacity of compressor to convey the ash with detailed calculations

i believe you mean Blower.

With the help of CR4 friends some 18 months back, I developed these calculation.

"the guest" helped me alot in sending me related e-books without whom I'd not have been able to undertake any calculation. Read my thread :Solid products pneumatic handling"

This is for flour , different capacity, different bulk density and different parameters.

Since you are a zero, suggest you work on this formula interchanging with your parameters. Come to your calculation then get in touch with Blower guys to further help you. Atleast you have something to start with.

Please do send me a copy of your calculation at my email address:duconems@yahoo.com

Flour: Pipe Sizing & Blower Selection M.N.DUJA DUCON :03002 353390

Total Batch Weight : 2253.0 kg/hr per 12 Batches

Average: 188.0 kg/hr per Batch => 200.0 kg/hr

Time Duration/Batch = 20 min = 200/20 = 10.0 Kg/min/Batch = 120.0 kg/min/12 Batches

Bulk Density Flour: 42 lb/ft3 = 42/2.24 = 19 kg/ft3 => 20.0 kg/ft3

1 ft3 = 0.0283 m3 = 20.0 kg ft3/0.0283 = 710.0 kg/m3

Pipe Dia : 6"Ø x 275 ft( inclusive heights + 15% frictional losses)

= 3.14 x (6)2 x 275/4x12x12 = 54 ft3 = 1.53 m3 (entire Volume)

710.0 kg/m3 x 1.53 m3 = 1086,3 => 1100 kg Flour inside Pipe only.

Flour required/min = 2253.0 kg/20min/Batch = 120 kg/ min

710.0 kg = 1 m3, therefore 120 kg/710 = 0.17 m3/min Flour

Keeping in view safety factor mechanical efficiency = 0.17 m3/min + 25% = 0.25 m3/min

Blower Calculation:

Air Velocity: 3200 ft/min Pressure Drop: 12 psig

Material Flow Rate: 0.25 m3/min x 710.0 kg= 177.5 kg/min x 2.2 x60 = 23,430 lbs/min

= > 24,000 lbs/hr material flow rate.

Based on Hand Book " Pneumatic Conveying Engineering" by Marcel Dekker Inc. Ch.11

"Air Flow required for 15000 lbs/hr at 25 psig pressure drop with air velocity 3200 ft/min

= 185 CFM". Hence based on this considering same velocity but 12 psig pressure drop :

185 CFM/2 = 92.5 CFM for 15000 lbs/hr.

For 24,000 lbs/hr = 92.5 CFM x 24000/15000 = 147.99 CFM= > 150 CFM.

Adding Mechanical efficiency of 50% = 225 CFM Blower Capacity.

Blower Selected :

Gardner Denver Cyclo Blower Model: 3CDL5, 2500 RPM – 198 CFM at 5psi

Size: 2.5" x 2.5", 6.7 BHP

A real good answer. Which type of Blower to be selected, centrifugal or PD?
