Tonnage Description of Ship Size

10/14/2010 1:47 PM

The Liberian ship SS Bridgewater is described as displacing 29,000 tons. Since Navy ship tonnage uses the long ton, or 2240#/ton, this would equate to 64,960,000#. Using the density of common water as a conversion factor, or 62.4#/cf, this equates to 1,041,026 cf. If the ship were 50' wide x 50' vertical height, or 2500 sf in cross-sectional area, the corresponding length would be 416'. I would think these numbers are ones that most average people could comprehend, rather than the tonnage figures used to describe the size of the ship. Why are the tonnage figures used? How did they get started?

Displacement is the water displaced by the hull, not the total volume of the ship.
