Need Blind, One Sided Threaded Fastener

10/19/2010 7:46 PM

Greetings All,

I tried global spec, but couldn't get any where cause I don't know what its called.

I need a fastener that is applied like a pop rivet, from one side with threads in it, the bolt that goes into it is about 6-8mm in diameter and has a strength of no less than 500lbs. Does anyone have a name for this product and or a company that produces it? I'm using it to attach PV panels, (that have "hat" channels attached to the back of them), to the frame.

thx

Try looking for a " Nutsert "

Nutserts are applied like a poprivet, used a lot in automotive industry, they come in all sorts of sizes and materials.

Try looking up "Dynabolt". Not much good for sheetmetal, but any solid base over about 10mm thick it is the go.

The ones I used some years ago were really great (no idea what the name was), but as the threaded part was in aluminum, I would be surprised if they could handle 500lbs. weight safely.

Maybe more "modern" ones have a harder metal for the threaded part......

Certainly I would suggest some tests to be certain that the strength you need is fully achieved. Generally speaking they should be able to handle around 1000lbs. to be safe for 500lbs....

I super glued mine into place for more security....but of course I was not loading up the threads as much either.....

IT IS CALLED A RIVNUT-NORMALLY USED ON AIRCRAFT.

Used on sheet metal applications as well as for honeycomb structural panels

What you might be looking for is called a Rivnut. They can be inserted from one side like a pop rivet and are drawn up with a special tool just like a pop rivet. They are typically used in sheetmetal where you can't get to the other side.

Thread-serts, Rivnuts, there are many varieties. Designs may be in one piece, or two piece. They may be manufactured out of aluminum, steel, cadmium plated steel, or stainless steel. I have seen some designs that were intended for use in aircraft skins that were with a thicker tapered shoulder, and a corrosion resistant coating on aluminum. I have bought many types from Grainger, and MSC.

There is one other design that might be of intrest to you. Wellnuts. They resembel the above designs, except they are made of rubber, with a brass center section that is bonded to the rubber, and threaded in the center. As the bolt is inserted and then tightened, the lower portion of the insert is drawn twoards the top of the bolt. Because the object being mounted restricts the insert from being pulled out of the hole, the rubber portion is forced to expand, gripping the bottom piece firmly.

Look here. If you can't find what you need here, You are not trying hard enough.

Re: Need Blind, One Sided Threaded Fastener

The ones I have used were called "RIVET NUTS" by the supplier

http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/search.shtml?op=search&N=11237&in_dim_search=1

http://www.mcmaster.com/#nut-certs/=9dhvex

They are available in St. Steel, aluminum, plated steel among other materials. St Stl would probably handle the 500 lbs load. If not use multiple units if possible.

For the larger sizes, 5/16" and up, use a pneumatic tool or one of the larger manual tools to insert them. The larger sizes tend to require a lot of muscle to insert them with the smaller tools.

Good Luck, Old Salt

in ausralia they are known as threadserts.

500lb for a 6mm fastener is asking a lot.

I am not sure, but there may be multiple fasteners, or it can be that the weight of the mounted part is 500 lb, and the fastener only needs to secure it from moving sideways. Just an opinion though.

http://avkfasteners.com/products.php

There are so many companies that make this type of insert. Here is another one. AVK. Some of the specs of this one were different than PEM, so between the two... I usually covered all my needs. This one does have an open end and also a closed end (blind) style.
