Install Pad Eye On The Existing Structure - Inside Generator Room

11/09/2010 3:30 AM

I need to install pad eye on the existing structure inside generator room. Location : Offshore Platform (Drilling rig converted to production platform) Area : Generator room (D399 x 4 units) Purposes - to lift the engine block (D399) for major overhaul in order to get an access to the crankshaft area. These pad eye will hold the engine block (bit tilted position) while the technician working on the crankshaft. Weight of Engine block - approx. 5.5 tonne Location of the pad eye : exactly on top main beam structure (roof) of each engine (inside the room) Pad eye capacity : 9.5 tonne each No of pad eye : 9 units What I need to do before I can proceed with the pad eye installation i.e > Structural calculation??? by structural engineer > Structural reinforcement i.e stiffener etc Pad Eye Selection : Done - we opt for 9.5 tonne Pad Eye installation : WPS/PQR - approved QC/Welding Inspector NDT - MPI Reference standard : EN12079 / DNV2.7-3 Perhaps somebody could enlighten the best way/method since the pad eye alone only cost a little but when inclusive the calculation the cost may shoot way up high. Thanks

It looks as though you understand what must to be done if it is to be done safely. There are no shortcuts.

Seems to me that there is no safe way of getting around engineering. Have a structural Engineer help you, pay for the consultation, and take the liability off your shoulders, and give it to someone who gets paid to take the liability. Many Engineering shortcuts have the potential to cause damage to equipment, maim and kill people, and end up costing way more money that doing it all right in the first place.

"by structural engineer"

Your words.... There are usually some of these guys hanging around on rigs. I'd ask around for one who can direct you to the original rig prints. You'll be a leg up with those in your pocket when you start a mod of this size. Also, you'll need them to avoid other problems for the same reason you call 1-800-DIG-RITE before you start putting a swimming pool in your backyard. Good Luck! Now I think I'll go invest in some Floor Dry stock.

pad eye and weld = cheap.
accidental death and dismemberment suit = millions.
guilt = intolerable.

hire a professional = wise.
