Force Required to cut Hot Stainless Steel Billet 100x100mm Square by Shearing

11/09/2010 9:32 PM

FOR ANSWERS PL TITLE " HOT BILLET SHEARING"

I am designing a hot billet shearing machine to cut 304 GRADE stainless steel billet of section 100mm x 100 mm which is at 600 to 700 degrees celsius. I want to calculate force required to shear cut. I am of the opinion that the blades initially cuts the billet by penetration to say about 25 to 30 mm deep and when the section becomes weak enough it gets fractured.

Apart from force required I also invite technical exposure to the actual phenomenon which causes the billet to shear. Proper calculations in terms of relation between UTS, shear stresses, and penetration cutting shall be appreciated.

Pl send your name and address for future technical friendship.

Shear strength of SS ≈ 50,000 psi, maybe somewhat less at the high temperature. (50,000 x 4" x 4")/2000 = 400 tons. (Just a wild guess; sorry about the inch units.)

(And that's before considering the max thickness capacity of whatever given shear.)

Tons vs tonnes is only about a 10% difference (tons of refrigeration and ship admeasurement tons do not apply).
