Variable Scan Time

How variable scan time is possible in DCS whereas not possible in PLC?

its possible , now all branded plc 's having this variable scanning option . in which plc u have seen this havnt.

I am keen on knowing how the variable scan is working? Since the controller is only one.

In the process industries, if it happens in less than 1 sec, it isn't real.

So why is a variable scan time an issue in DCS?
