Did you bend the wire so that it made contact with the magnet, brushing it lightly?

whats the point did you say the other end of cell.Is the magnet a conducting one?

This does work if constructed with the correct parts. In this case, the magnet (or at least its exterior surface coating) must be conductive. These types of simple motors nicely demonstrate some basic principles of electromagnetics.

I make these with my physics class. Instead of making a loop of wire turn, we stick the magnet to the head of small nail or drywall screw. The point will stick to one end of the battery. Jumper from the other terminal to the edge of the magnet with your wire. It spins a lot faster than the loop.
