Effect of Pump Suction Head

Suppose i have choosen a pump that will give TDH 90 ft at 50 gpm.

what will be the discharge head and flow if we have 10 ft suction head?

The suction hight & suction losses need to be added to get the total duty point head required for pump and driver selection.

If you did not the duty point will move to the left of the curve where the system curve for the reduced flow and the pump curve will cross. (if ever)

For example it may cross at 40gpm at at 95 ft total head. Which may not satisfy the demand.

The situation may be rectified by increasing the speed or impeller diameter and driver rating.

NPSH calculations must be done but at 10ft you may be ok.

Dear 'Hendrik'

based on your reply this means the available suction head must always be specified to pump vendor along with desired duty point in the process of buying a pump.

....and the pump vendor's offering must be assessed by the purchaser for suitability before an order is placed. So what?
