How Profitable Ought The Dump Be?

11/21/2010 2:12 PM

What makes the difference between profits from trash, and losses from trash? Trash and Wastes represent misused resources. At the extremes we know nuclear wastes are coveted by some.

Some get rich from hauling wastes.

The Landfill generates LFG, or landfill gas.

Wood chips, glass, and all manner of stuff go out to the Landfills of the World. What landfills are perfect and give profits to their operators day in and day out?

By "perfect" I mean they keep clean our livingspaces, and require no subsidies to do so.

Lee County, Florida seems to have stumbled on the perfect trash/recycling program. The clean incenerator and recycling program is so effecient that it paid for a second incnerator.

Let's hope the model spreads aye? Leastways even if the profit is small, the operation looks self supporting? Grant?

What color is glass from recycled bottles really supposed to be? Fluctuations in the price of aluminum need to be figured at the lowest possible when making budgets for the operations.

Regarding the colour of glass, I see here in Spain that all the recycling boxes take any colour whereas in UK they usually ask you to separate into white (colourless), brown and green. So presumably they are easier to sort into different streams in the UK for different hued end products.

Good Morning. There is lot of scope in India. Most valuable waste food from hotels, canteens, homes, etc is wasted in gross. I have tried at many places but my efforts are I think not enough. 40 years back as a kid I used to put all my home generated food waste in small pits and used it as manure for my garden.

It all depends on personal/corporate view. Companies tend to replace items on a cycle, regardless of continuing performance as this is perceived to be more efficient to the running of the company due to fewer break-downs. (Not as noticable in high value product). Most send to landfill where possible as this is the cheapest/easiest option for them and saves staff time finding buyers. The residual value is not seen by them.

Here the Dump charges by truckload ,like 10.00 to 25.00 dollars.mostly brush. There are pumps that monitor drained off leachate water for contamination.

THE people who own only so much land for a dump might consider hauling it away as the pile starts to grow to States soliciting it to raise ground to Above Sea level.

Futuristic uses: that one day a man-made Mountain range built out of non-recycled refuse on the Arizona border or in Death valley, built so high it would have snow-caps, using Mountain high dumps to collect water and hold in cool air.

The idea was to fill it to 1.form a circular Crater2. line with drywall trash(gypsum)and then place Negative Mining trash coal-ash and lead-slag and volcanic ash in the middle of it and as it grows taller eventually making the outer-shell Topsoil and Pines.

One of the best technologies to get rid of human trash is the new Plasma Gasification plant. These can convert waste to power by using a GE gas turbine, and payback is about ten years if the electricity is sold to the grid.

The process also produces water and a solid that can be formed into blocks for paving, building, etc.

Hello Transcendian.

The City of Fargo, ND has a methane collection system at the landfill. This link shows the energy produced by a small wind turbine at the landfill, solar collectors, and the generator. The information is sort of sketchy, but the numbers are impressive for the landfill serving a city of about 100,000 people.

A popular north-of-England expression:

"Where there's muck, there's brass." - the word brass meaning money.
