Difference Between Max Working Pressure and Max Differential Pressure

11/30/2010 11:37 PM

What is the difference between max working pressure and max differential pressure with respect to pumps domain? one of the pumps i came across was having a spec like of max working pressure = 400psi (28.6 bar), max differential pressure = 125 psi (8.6 bar). Thanks to all you guys __________________

Do you have a dictionary by chance? How can anyone who does not know this call himself a "rotary pump specialist"?

Guru... sorry for that name. Could you let me know the difference instead?

This seems like homework.

Tell us what you think maximum differential pressure would mean. Would you think that a difference is involved?

Differential pressure is the difference between the inlet and outlet pressure.... correct me if i am wrong.

That's right; those are just other words for suction and discharge.

No correction necessary -- you are right.

The max working pressure relates to the strength of the housing, to prevent the pump from breaking. The max differential pressure (difference between suction and discharge pressures) relates to the strength of the shaft and to the power rating of the motor, to prevent either of them from overloading.

For example, I might have an ammonia refrigerant pump designed to operate at -20°F (about 5 psi) suction and 30 psi discharge. The pump might be rated for 50 psi max differential pressure. However, if the system is idle and warms up to 90°F, the pressure in the pump housing will be about 180 psi, and the pump may have a maximum working (or case) pressure of 250 psi. This is just an example, but fairly realistic for ammonia pumps.
