Brake Screw?!?

12/03/2010 5:11 PM

Fellow CR4'ers, I am in need of your vast knowledge and experience.

I have a project that i am working on that uses a "spring loaded set screw" as a brake to apply force to a pivot shaft to reduce the amount of ease that a part rotates around an axis. My customer currently supplies these parts to us and he has requested that we find, or design, a cheaper version.

This component is a stainless steel "set screw" that has 2 belleville washers (springs) and a brass shoe. The brass shoe floats on a shaft from the set screw and the belleville washers (springs) apply pressure onto the brass shoe. So as you tighten the set screw the belleville washers increase in the amount of tension they are applying to the pivot shaft. This is all one piece, not separate pieces (i will try and get a picture posted on Monday).

Does anyone know of a part that meets this description that i could purchase rather than make it? Seems to me that someone who is tooled up to make this part would be able to produce it much more cost effective than i could

Thanks for you assistance

This sounds like "ball plungers" or "spring plungers." I don't know the size of yours, but the rough average price is ~$5 each in Grainger.

Why not do like the rest of the universe. Have one non-Belleville flat washer being pressed by two brass shoes pads.

Some concept of scale would be nice. Forces acting on the "driven" part to make it move. Washer diameter, you know, just enough information to allow us to help you.

I thought I saw somewhere a set screw with a plastic tip set into the end.

Here is one.

They have different types of plastic in the tips.

Try using teflon instead of brass or

Use a totally dissimilar approach by using nylon / leather cord with single turn around the shaft tied to adjustable tension springs at the ends or

Follow the exerciser cycle arrangement where a screw adjustable stretch 'nylon strip' applies pressure to a large dia plastic wheel.

Most importantly as the worthy Guest has appropriately said "No body understands better about what you are doing than you".

Try to use the set screw and a piece of round polyurethane instead

Use polyurethane as a spring and brake.

we are all farting in the wind thinking of things. we need the facts. at first it sounded to me the same set up an electric motor has for the brushes. brush , spring ,screw. than on a larger scale a hydraulic roller lifter came to mind. How much was your customer paying for the part. If the customer wants a cheaper version send a proto to china.you get what you pay for.

Post the picture with the part next to a ruler so that we can see the siz roughly.

Also post a picture with it taken apart, also next to a ruler....

"a brake to apply force to a pivot shaft to reduce the amount of ease that a part rotates around an axis. "

Avail suitable/required space around the pivot and have a polymer (Nylon like) bush with good resilience (not rigid) with an interference fit. This would constantly apply break on the shaft and would prevent free rotation.

Need dimensions. Pictures and/or drawing will help. What material is the "brake" applied against? Joe

As I understand it, the set screw pushes on the Belleville washers, and they push on the shoe to apply some braking force to the shaft.

Would something like a worm drive hose clamp with a suitable lining do the trick?
