Laws of Magnetism

12/04/2010 7:45 AM

law 1 like poles attract unlike poles attract law 2 coulomb's law the force exerted by one pole on the other pole is i)directly proportional to the product of the pole strength ii)inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the poles iii)depends on the nature of the medium surrounding the poles

MAGNETIC FIELD the region around the magnet within which the influence of the magnet is experienced is called magnetic field

the presence of the magnetic field is represented by the imaginary lines around the magnet .these lines are called MAGNETIC LINES OF FORCE

THE TOTAL NUMBER OF MAGNETIC LINES OF FORCE EXISTING THE PARTICULAR MAGNETIC FIELD IS CALLED magnetic flux

Law 1 is true for most type of magnetisms (eg animal magnetism) but not all

eg in magnetism of money - likes attract (money attracts money)

But what is the question?

The laws can be continued...

- There can be no magnetic monopole

- The two poles can not be separated (corollary of the above)

- Retention Law (long bars retain for longer time than short bars,)

- The two poles in any magnet are opposite and equistrength,

....

the pole strength is opposite but i think the pole strength of the north pole is greater than that of the south pole...........

" i think the pole strength of the north pole is greater than that of the south pole..........."

That's only true if you are in the northern hemisphere. If you are in the southern hemisphere, the south pole would be stronger.

And, if you were on the moon, magnets wouldn't work at all. That's why they invented Velcro®. We use right handed Velcro® on earth and left handed Velcro® on the moon, to avoid your confusion.

This is a case of "TBLTB"

L.L. Didn't say it wasn't. But only when a criteria is met.

magnets (natural or earth : ) magnets) don't work on the moon....... I did not know that.

Nope, too far from the Earth and the poles. The magnet can't tell the north pole from the south pole from up there, so it just gives up and doesn't attract anything.

magnets don't need any space, gravity or hemisphere to work and it wont lost its magnetic power even in outer space.......:-)

[if you were on the moon, magnets wouldn't work at all] i don't think so if they didn't work american's would't land their ship in moon......

Are you sure you're not confusing gravity with magnetism? There's a rule of thumb for that, too, you know.

Can't we just stick to True-False questions?

And I thought the teacher said there wouldn't be any pop quizzes on Saturdays.

I can hear Faraday, Coulomb, Laplace, Ampere, Biot, Savart, Gauss, Henry, Øersted, Weber, Maxwell and especially Tesla are all spinning in their graves now. Your undergraduate Physics and Calculus classes should introduce you to the equations and genius of these scientists.

i thought the internet is a great tool to learn and get more intelligent. Never realised that it can help stupidity to be exponentially increased ... stands to reason come to think of it.....

You left out the most important name in modern science. The originator of the most closely nearly perfect ideal law known to mankind.
