This a simple AC or DC motor with an offset weight attached to the output shaft, creating the vibration.

I have a large unit called The Equalizer that uses the same principle, but I use it to relieve the pain in my lower back. External use only. It's quite effective.

Don't talk junk about my Equalizer. It's big, black, powerful....and it works wonders on my lower back.

Here's a thought:

Why don't you take two of the more worn ones from the enormous collection you have on the shelves of your lair and smash them together , then examine the pieces .

Similar to the method for studying sub-atomic particles with the Giant Hardon Hadron Collider.

I'm jes sayin'.

A vibrator used correctly will always produce a good finish.

In all seriousness, it's nothing more than a little 3VDC electric motor spinning with an eccentric weight on the end of the shaft.

A very small version of this.
