"Practice' Page on CR4

12/06/2010 12:11 PM

What about having a "practice" page on CR4; that is free for newer participants and 'Guests', to experiment, with informational, as well as interaction-al page (as in Powererpoint as an example), where potential replies from those wishing to comment upon, or add content to a discussion, can get a proper and comfortable 'feeling for' what's entailed in a posting, reply, or blog entry?

This may help people from entering onto an embarrassing, non-sensical or incompleted intentional entry from well meaning participants.

Also to assign an arbitrary, temporary, numerically assigned 'Guest' number within the discussion at hand being viewed by the rest of us; that is "Guest1" , "Guest2" , etc... in order to tell one 'Guest' from another.

Thank you - Loupy.

I'm not sure I quite get what you mean.

Are you proposing an isolated section of CR4 that's basically just devoted to learning the CR4 commenting interface by allowing people to post practice questions and respond with fake replies?

Or are you saying somehow that real questions & answers from Guests and new users would be shunted off to some "newbies" page where they'd be looked at and critiqued by "regular" uses?

Or none of the above, perhaps? Explain it again using itty-bitty words please?

As a long-term, card-carrying "Guest", I appreciate the confusion that Guest-ness can impart on posts. But a simpler method than somehow generating Guest1, Guest2, etc. would be for CR4 to require registration to comment. Even though I've previously explained why I'm not keen on registration, I'd do it if required to comment.

Yes, in 'itty-bitty words', I am proposing that of which you mentioned of a separate section for new "guests" to LEARN the protocols of entering onto this wonderful discussion website, together with putting the CR4 rules of engagement, in front of their keyboards, before they type a question, or respond with a well meaning response, and hopefully NOT a 'fake reply'. [which is causing a lot of sarcasm to some new people engaging discussions (deserved or not) , and of which I am sometimes guilty of myself.]

As well as exposing to new participants, to all of the editing (including photos, schematics, diagrams, translations, phrasing, grammar, dictionaries, spell checking and such) features that this forum has/is allowing us to interact with others with, in this educational and entertaining site to enjoy and be a contributing part of, without some of the "blow-offs" as is occurring with more frequency in recent times.

I also agree with you that "Guests" should register ONLY if required to, and that request should emanate from Administration. I know from other forums I've come across that I can only read responses from other members and am not allowed to put forth a comment, unless I register with that particular discussion group.

Loupy.

If this Site Glossary is not enough to go by then one should step back and learn what to do before one speaks or enters into an engineering website. If you want to swim you will have to know how to move your arms and legs. Not waving! drowning?

If in doubt, learn it the hard way. Ky.

Hi, ky; Yes, I agree that the Site Glossary should be put forth for newer members, or 'Guests' for a tutorial, as I tried to explain in my reply to 'Guest' for just the same reasons.

It's only just a suggestion - nothing more - to keep some unintelligible misunderstood questions/comments to a minimum, when they may have a great deal of input to contribute to, (as they mostly have been of great value to answering comments or postings), to be considered, regarding subjects, before being "blown-off" right from the start.

regards - Loupy.

Possibly there could be a Bizzaro CR4, or Kiddie CR4? A Barbie and Ken world for DeEngineers?

The Zombie CR4?

Exactly what sort of people do you imagine would desire, or be desirable for such practice?

As it is it is pretty much a meritocracy where you are either helpful, entertaining, inspiring, or not.

The reason the Guest option is really more so a member can post more anonymously than they can under their own avatar, than so jerks are enabled.

Hi,Guest?; I tried to open your link. but when it opens, it offers me a requst to "upgrade" to a newer form of viewing exprience.

I immediately shut of, and restarted with a scan. I'm back on line, hopefully virus free.

My point exactly. - Loupy.

Hi,Trans., thank's for the uptake. And thank you for the new word I learned today -"meritocracy", as fully explained on wiki©®™$£¥ist's content. I will browse that concept of meritocracy, as to learn this new terminology.

Again, I really only thought, that this post of question posed, might have garnered some type of helpful suggestions to all, including those involving part of themselves in this forum. - Loupy.

Loupy,

Every page is a practice page, if you are a guest.

The only people who bother to read the FAQ's are the same ones who register.

Happy Holidays.

Thank you, lynlynch; As usual, you are correct in your analysis of seeing things in the ways that they really are.

All the best to yourself and your's.

Not a bad idea at all.

May I suggest a slight adjustment in perspective?

What seems to be an issue is "what exactly are you asking?"

Perhaps the 'page' is just help with exactly that.

Some folk who are not "knee-jerks" volunteer to help posters not sure, or ESL insecure, to compose what they really want to ask the broader membership.

Nice idea, & I'd support such a 'page'

Thank you, and I really think that the next posting on this blog - "Our (CR4 members) Responses....." seems to address the same points. - Loupy.

?

When I read your idea, my tiny mind jumped to a sort of "help me compose my question" page, for any folk; new, English or terms struggling, guest or not.

Many threads start with poorly phrased and information inadequate questions.

Ok, it's often the fun challenge to dig out what is really going on, before a 'solution' becomes clear. But not always.

Seemed to me your idea (as I read it) could help a lot of people to better compose their questions. Writing a good question is very far from easy, even with high language and technical skills.

If it eliminates a lot of "why is everyone so unkind", so much the better, but that's not my prime point here.
