What are the reasons for bird caging in ACSR conductors?

Birdcaging can occur for various reasons, among them:

1. Too extreme a bend in the cable for its length, diameter and stiffness.

2. Improper crimping of compression connectors.

3. Poor handling of the cable while preparing to install connectors, so that the stranding separates.

4. Ice buildup within a compression connector that does not have a drain hole, when water wicks in and freezes. Then the ice forces the cable out of the crimp.

There may be more, but these are common.

The cable may have been faired incorrectly when unrolled from the reel, imposing an "untwist" on it.
