Wonderful!

<admiration>

It takes a lot of bottle to trust a lion to prefer to rear up for a cuddle than to bite one's head off!

I've seen another video that is much longer. The lion pictured in the video had a mate from the wild.

That mate joined the other and greeted the two men in the picture, which was even more amazing when you consider that the wild mate had never met them before. I don't know if the mate had prior contact with humans, but it was a stunning sight to see.

Here is the FULL STORY.

This is part 1 and you can see the other 4 parts as you go along.

It's touching but not surprising. Years ago we had a budgie named Willybird, which our border collie despised. More than a year after the budgie died, if I at any time said,
"Hey, there's Willybird!", the dog would growl threateningly and scan the room for any sign of its late rival.

Not if the next post has religious undertones.

Before Adam's fall, all the animals were friends to him more than that.

When I was a kid our dogs could count, their memories seemed pretty short and they had no sense of time. We would often do Saturday errands in an old van that the dogs couldn't hurt. The front passenger seat was only big enough for one dog. Each time we stopped we would have the dog in the seat switch to the floor and the other dog would get the seat.

If we made one or three stops the number of turns in the front would be even and the dogs would be happy. If we made two stops the number of turns in the front seat would be uneven and the dog that was shorted a front seat ride would be grumpy for several hours. The funny thing was that there was no need for the length of seat time to be equal. One could have a 30 minute ride and the other two five minute rides and the dog with the single ride of 30 minutes would still be unhappy.

Once we got past two rides each they both were pretty happy and we didn't need to count any more. If we drove past the farm dairy and got them both ice cream they were very happy. A dog's life wasn't too bad back then.

Freebee, our sons family dog (he died recently) would sit outside the house when we were still 400 clicks away. He would just know and shake so bad when we arrived that we thought he would break his back or shake his tail off.

He was a perfect guard dog and I could speak to him, while sober. When he was approached by drunks he would show his teeth and make sure they didn't come too close. Even with me or my son.

He is dearly missed by all, Ky.

most definately, though some animals are more capable than others. for example, i had a german shepherd that not only had a very good memory, but also had a self- awareness of his own mortality. he did'nt live for the moment like most dogs. he had the intelligence to be able to anticipate what to exspect days in advance. as a dog trainer, i was always amazed by his thought processes. i considered him to be as savvy as a adult in many ways.

For some reason my coffee tastes all salty this morning.

I had a german shepherd who discovered that if she dropped a ball in our (above ground) pool that the circulation would bring it back around to the deck in a few minutes. So she'd drop the ball, wander off to do other dog stuff, and then come back just as the ball was coming into reach from the deck. Was she a scientist?

I had an australian shepherd who loved to collect a pile of dog toys, and would spend several minutes arranging the pile until everything was just right. Then she would carefully bite the pile in just the right spot, picking up all the toys at once. Then she'd do a couple of victory laps around the yard. Was she an engineer?

Our mammal friends may not be as smart as we are, but I think in some cases the margin is not really that great. Thanks for the video, and thanks to AH for finding the extended versions.

I have had the pleasure of bottle feeding a couple of jaguars and playing with them as they grew up. Same with a lioness. I will never forget the experience, playing with 90 pound kittens is something everyone should try at least once. These were my "foster" children. We met them at a reserve in Ontario that rescued large cats from zoos (yes they need to be rescued from zoos) circuses and fools who think they can keep a tiger in an apartment. (or worse) My sister and I paid for their care but had to travel 5 or 6 hours to visit them.

One time we were on our way to visit them and stopped at the pet store. We were scanning the largest of the rope toys when the sales women came by with the usual "can I hepl you?" We said we were looking for toys for our cats and she responded with, "well the little mice and catnip are over in the next aisle". I pulled out my wallet and showed her the photos of the lion. "This is my cat," I said. Needless to say she left us in the large dog toy department.

Alright, everyone agrees that animals are more intelligent than normally credited. What about insects? (some people keep bugs for pets so it's still on topic)

I had a problem with carpenter ants in my rural residence, so I was forced to dust around the perimeter of the house with insecticide to create a barrier against them. The problem persisted. One day, hanging out laundry, I noticed ants marching in single file along the clothesline towards the house.

They had obviously assessed the situation, consulted among themselves, came to an agreement, went to the tree some forty feet away where the clothesline was connected, up the tree, and then along the clothesline suspension bridge to the house. After I had dusted around the base of the tree the ant problem stopped.

Don't tell me bugs can't think.
