Regarding 5 HP Motor

12/11/2010 7:47 AM

Dear Sir,

I have a 5 HP submersible pump in a bore well, how much power in units it will consume if I run it for one hour daily ? Power rate/per unit is a Rs 6/- per unit in my area.

Regards,

subash sanan

Let's see.

Maximum power 5hp which is, er, 3.8kW, multiplied by 1 h per day is 3.8kWh per day then multiply by Rs 6/- per unit is, er, oh, er, about no more than about Rs 23/- per day.

Deal or no deal?

I just cannot resist dotting some i's and crossing some t's sometimes.

Actually most motors are rated in the amount of shaft power the deliver and not the electric power they draw. A likely high but not unreasonable additional 5-10% should be added to put this at about 4-4.2kW. This is the power drawn by this motor at a full load. Now the OP added a time factor of running this for an hour. 4.2kWh is the energy that this motor draws with one hour of constant use. Most electricity utilities charge for the total energy an individual consumes over a preset (monthly) amount of time.

Good point well made. Motor efficiency is normally about 85-90% as you imply.

Also, it should be noted that the motor will only consume output shaft demand, so if the pump onl;y requires half power, the motor only consumes half power (roughly, less losses etc), so the 4.2kW/hour maight be 2.1kW/hour in this example.

I suppose its unlikely to be at (or near) full load reducing the efficiency a lttle and power factor much more so.

There are many examples of solar powerred irrigation pumps in use in Spain using VFD technology, BTW.

For one month 23x30=690, an year 690X12=8000, try solar with 2kvar capacitor.

If it is for agriculture purpose in India at different states there are different tariffs please check it before arrive any final figure. Calculation of power consumption is explained by PWSlack.
