Direct and Indirect Mechanical Linkage

What is the definition and different of direct mechanical linkage and indirect mechanical linkage?

Could be one of several depending on what context. Chain and sprocket VS dry fluid coupling. Lovejoy coupling VS timing pulley and belt. Transmission in your car could be considered either direct or indirect. Automatic or manual? If I pull on a rope and it moves a lever I would consider it direct. If I pull on a rope and it opens a valve that fills a bucket with water that pulls on another rope that activates the lever, I would consider it indirect. Maybe just inserting a gearbox can be considered indirect in certain contexts.
