As a general rule, I always used a ss rod compatible to the ss being welded to the cs.

i think its opposite cs electrode will be preferred

the electrode used to join cs to ss will be of the chemical composition approximate to the carbon steel ie:- E 7018 as far as i think

316 L will be used to join cs to ss

its 309L, i bet
