Turbine Efficiency

What are the main reasons to reduce turbine efficiency?

Because that could be a subsidiary objective to some real objective, such as backing off on a lightly loaded grid without shutting down the turbine altogether.

Another badly worded question. Could mean various things eg deliberate reduction (as suggested by Tornado) or maybe asking why turbines aren't more efficient than they are.

Turbine efficiency could be effected by many things

Poor alignment, poor steam, poor operating, startup and shutdown, bad lubrication, rubbing and late (PM).

The efficiency of steam turbine mainly depends on foollowing factors,

1. steam inlet pressure.

2. steam inlet temparature

3.steam exahust pressure/vaccum.

You must be maintaining all the parameters but inside condition of the turbine is beyond your controle if you are not maintaining steam conditions as per specs. Extra silica in the steam can play havok inside by deposits on the lower pressure stages. This can be judged by increased nozzle box pressure.

It's happened to us. Currently we are overvaluing one STG due to high vibration at turbine HP side and during inspection found all rotating and stationary blades consist erosion ,pitting and deposit. I think so this happened due to the inlet steam was not pure or has a lot of condensate as what we suspect. Now we are doing analysis with vendor to find the root cause. Can you add or explain dose these problems happened due to poor steam or there is another problem could accelerate the erosion and pitting? Below is some pictures of our turbine.

Yes your photographs shows it well. This turbine is an example of poor conditions of steam as well as overshooting of maintenance schedules. It is not neccessary that steam has condensate directly at nozzles but poor degree of superheat may be one of the mazor reasons for this. Deposits are due to poor blowdown in the boilers and steam carryover through steam drum demister.

Now you can name, all steam generation fascility needs to be overhauled which is the root cause of poor the poor efficiency of the turbine.

Another big reason may be poor chemistery of boiler feed water.

Poor steam. I see this almost every time. Steam is too wet. Not hot enough.What are the blades made out of? SS what model? What hardness? What pitch?

I try to sell erosion coating on all Steam turbines due to the lack of dry steam.
